Parks Canada closing down the Canadian Register of Historic Places
In late 2025, Parks Canada announced that they would be shutting down the Canadian Register of Historic Places, found at historicplaces.ca. This nationwide resource contains indispensable information about heritage sites, gathered by many people over many years. Taking it down without any succession plan is a tragic loss for the collective knowledge of culture and heritage of Canada.
To fill the void, other organizations are stepping in. The National Trust for Canada initiated a project in 2026 to replace the register. At a more grassroots level, the register in its current form is available here and on the Wayback Machine repository (this is the 26 March 2026 snapshot), possibly in perpetuity. To demonstrate that more and better is possible, Electric Archaeology has scraped the entire dataset, transformed it into portable JSON format, and redeployed it within an impressive dashboard application.
